Classification of Chronic Low Back Pain disorders – setting the framework for a mechanism-based intervention
Wim Dankaerts
Aims and Scope:
This 1-day clinical workshop outlines a broad classification model developed by Peter O’Sullivan for the assessment and management of CLBP disorders. This approach incorporates both physical as well as cognitive components and provides a multi-dimensional framework to manage patients with CLBP disorders.
Major focus will be on developing clinical skills to assess and sub-classify pain disorders of the lumbo-pelvic region, where motor control has been compromised and is deemed to be an underlying basis for disorder. A motor learning intervention for the management of these disorders will be presented.
This workshop draws together current knowledge as well as ongoing clinical work and research investigating the classification and management of CLBP disorders. This clinical workshop is dynamic, interactive and practical. It includes case studies, clinical reasoning and equips physiotherapists to develop skills in diagnostics as well as the design of motor learning interventions.
Wim Dankaerts is accredited by Peter O’Sullivan to lecture on this topic.
Timetable:
9.00 |
- CLBP: ‘the big problem’: a diagnosis and management dilemma
- O’Sullivan’s ‘big picture view’ on CLBP
- Motor Control Impairment (MCI) as the underlying mechanism behind CLBP?
|
10.15 |
Refreshment break |
10.30 |
- Relevant anatomy and biomechanics of the motor control system of the lumbar spine
- Five directional-based patterns of MCI
- Aim is to identify characteristics of specific patterns of MCI; recognize their clinical presentation,
(This is based on videotaped case studies) |
12.30 |
Lunch |
13.30 |
Case studies to integrate all the presented material into practice; followed by group discussion and clinical reasoning. |
15.15 |
Refreshment break |
15.30 |
- Management of CLBP subjects with sub-classification of motor control impairment.
- Aim is to develop clinical skills to manage CLBP patients with sub-classification of MCI; based on sub-classification being able to develop a pattern specific mechanism based management program, including emphasis on contributing factors.
